In the final of the men's 3000-meter roller skating relay on Sunday, South Korea lost a heartbreaker.
Chung Chul-won (Andong City Hall), the last runner, took the lead as he approached the finish line and looked set to win gold.
However, he slowed down as he prepared for his pre-final hurrah, allowing his closest rival, Hwang Yulin (Chinese Taipei), to stretch out and overtake him.
The final time was 4:05.692 for Taiwan and 4:05.702 for South Korea, a difference of just 0.01 seconds. Even Huang Yulin, who chased all the way, was not convinced that she had "turned it around. It wasn't until I saw the scoreboard that I realized I had pulled off a 'miracle'."
Chung Chul-won, who lost the gold medal by 0.01 seconds, wrote an apology, saying it was a "frivolous act that I shouldn't have done."
In athletics, he made history by winning by 0.01 seconds. The relay team of Kim Kook-young (Gwangju Metropolitan Government), Lee Jung-tae (Anyang City Hall), Lee Jae-sung (Korea Gymnastics University), and Park Won-jin (Sokcho City Hall) crossed the line in 38.75 seconds in the first heat of the men's 400-meter relay on the second day of athletics.
It was good enough for second place overall, but the athletes' expressions were full of disappointment. They were 0.01 seconds short of the Korean record of 38.74.
For some, it might be just 0.01 seconds, but for them, it was the difference between being able to pull that much more or not being able to pull that much more.
"We're not satisfied yet," the athletes vowed, and in the three-day final, they crossed the finish line in 38.74 seconds, setting a new Korean record. The athletes cheered as they unfurled the Korean flag and celebrated being "0.01 seconds faster".
In the martial arts event, karate, there were also disappointing results, with victory and defeat being decided by 0.01 seconds. Pee Jae-yoon (KOR) saw his medal dreams come to an end on Friday when he lost 2-4 to Bahman Asghari (IRAN) in the kumite round of 16.
Pee Jae-yoon took a 2-1 lead with a golden goal one second before the end of the 1-1 match, but immediately conceded to a back kick attack and lost 2-4. The opponent's attack appeared to have been made after the final whistle, but the video review showed that it was valid by 0.01 seconds. 먹튀검증
The 0.01-second delay would have resulted in a victory for Pee Jae-yoon, but 0.01 seconds changed their fates.
Choi Dong-yeol (Gangwon Special Self-Governing Province) won the bronze medal in the men's 50-meter breaststroke final on Sept. 29, setting a new Korean record of 26.93 seconds. Choi's time was just 0.01 seconds behind the silver medalist, Sun Jiajun (CHINA), who clocked 26.92.
Choi said, "I'm disappointed that I was only 0.01 seconds behind the second place. But I think it will motivate me to grow to the next level," said Choi, who used the 0.01 seconds as motivation.
